I wouldn't believe a nurse, that I know. One of the top ITP experts has said that it is okay to fly with low counts. I'd believe him.

I would believe my daughter in law, a nurse.

You know - I moved to Tokyo a couple months after being diangosed and on 60mg of prednisone, not knowing when I would get a hematologist or who that hematologist would be. That's a long flight from here to Narita - then moved to Hong Kong, flew lots of places from there & spent many hours on a plane, you know what? I never even thought to ask anyone if it was ok.

So believe who you want to - it is your body and you need to do what is right for you.

Hi Kelirae,
I recently flew around the world from Australia with a count of 30. A small extra premium got me insurance, & I had no (ITP) issues. Hope that helps reassure you.

We just flew the 3 hours from Spain to Manchester with my son's count around 5 - I checked with his haematologist and he wasn't concerned

Nothing against nurses, honest. I have really had some bad/incorrect information from nurses over the years (like the above). They just misspeak sometimes without really knowing.

For the record, docs are not always right either, but you have to trust someone sometimes.

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

If you are prone to nosebleeds, you may want to fly with nose sprays to keep your nostrils moist in an air-conditioned cabin.

I remember reading here years ago that at very low counts you could have problems with small vessels in ear bleeding due to the pressure.
