About a month ago, we noticed our two year old, Elijah, had a lot of bruises on his legs and arms. He also had bruising on his chest, which I can't recall him getting. He didn't have any other symptoms. We took him to get a complete blood count (CBC) test on a Saturday morning, the day before Mother's day, and his doctor called before we even got back home. The doctor said that his platelet counts were really low, 8. His doctor also said that we should get another CBC check the following Monday. Monday came and his platelets were still at 8. By this time, his Doctor had already made arrangements to connect with a specialist from Children's Hospital of Oakland. We were told to get another CBC test two days later on a Thursday. This was when he was immediately admitted to the Oncology department of the Benioff Children's Hospital. He had the IVIG therapy which resulted to an increase of 9 the following morning and 17 that night. We were discharged late that night. Side effects from IVIG were fever, nausea, and vomiting. I believe he vomited three times that night.
Two weeks later, CBC test results his platelets have only gone up to 21, then 8 after another week.
He was admitted in the hospital last weekend because platelets dropped to 2 again. Another IVIG therapy and he was scheduled to get the bone marrow aspiration done. Platelets went up to 19 and 21 that afternoon. The doctors present there ruled out leukemia, lupus, haemophilia as a cause of the low platelets. The other concern I have is that his WBC are low as well. It has been 1.9-2.1 this whole month.
The doctors still have not given me an answer about that.
As of right now, he is on ranitidine and prednosolone 10 ml twice a day for the next 14 days. No other symptoms besides bruising and slight nosebleeding, less than 2 minutes. Thank God!
He has another CBC test today....Taking it one day at a time and hoping this condition will run its course sooner than later
