Hello all,
Check out this research paper from Jordan. I think it has great potential for this "incurable" disease. I had come across the "yeast connection" references while investigating health benefits of essential oils and was quick to forward it to my daughter who has ITP. She has been focused on trying to kill the yeast for the last month. Today, her best friend sent her this reference. Check it out! Also check out the website "candida support". I hope we will have good news in a couple of months!

The abstract is here www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21860227 but the article is pay per view everywhere I looked. Did you find it somewhere legitimately for free?

That kind of fits (I think) with what the UK ITP conference was reporting. They are sponsoring a study into food intolerances and ITP. I didn't understand all that he was saying, but the guy suggested that there was link between unusual gut flora and a number of conditions including autism. I don't think the study had found any direct link between food intolerance and ITP yet, but I think he was saying that there were compounds found in the urine of all the ITP subjects which weren't found in any of the control people. I just wish I could remember what they are now........

Benzenes. I don't think he said they were in all ITP patients but common to some while not common to the controls.

Ths slides from his talk are here.. www.itpsupport.org.uk/conventionppt/showjohnhunter2012.htm

No, it was not free, $33 I believe. Unfortunately, I did not realize that when I posted originally. Regardless, this seems very important. The fact that there were only two individuals in the the study's cohort would recommend that PDSA members step up and provide any anecdotal information that suggests a link between Candida and ITP.

What is interesting as that neither of their patients responded to the normal ITP treatments. This suggests that those of us who do respond, say to steroids or IVIG, are not going to find that this is the cause. But for those who do not respond to anything it would be worth looking into.

I absolutely am convinced that ITP can be caused by Candida overgrowth.
My platelets went from >30,000 to 192,000 after starting a low sugar/low carb diet and heavy doses of high potency probiotics (Garden of Life) along with yogurt and other foods with live cultures. I made other changes for the better as well; but I believe much of my problem was the diet and lifestyle.
If you add up a poor diet (my was very poor) with stress, fatigue and a round of antibiotics- that is a recipe for disaster. I also think that's why people are having success with papaya leaf extract, because of it's anti-fungal properties.

I'm sure that there are other causes for ITP, but everyone should experiment with this possibility.. just sayin!

On that whole thread about papaya leaf extract, only one person has claimed a good response (apart from Dimples who was a fraud) and that is Robfoss who started with a count of 76 and says half way through the thread "It does go up and down.80-90-110 etc", so probably a normal fluctuation.

Nobody else has had a response at all.

As to "stepping up" PDSA would have to advocate for a study; and the PDSA community would have to provide the anecdotal evidence.  My thought is that what better group than the PDSA family to identify if there is a correlation between Candida and ITP.  It does make the assumption that, of people with ITP, part of that population also suffers from Candida overgrowth (or have personal histories of yeast infections).  It also assumes that those individuals have been treated for the yeast infection as well as having periodic platelet counts.  Then it's a matter of determining if their platelet counts went up after the treatment for the Candida was successful.  Individuals within the PDSA community that fit the bill (Candida + ITP) would have to be willing to step up and share their experience.  I am not an expert in this line of research, but I can't help thinking that there are researchers out there that could develop a meaningful analysis.
