Hey everyone , my name is zack ,i am 17 and i was diagnosed with itp in december of 2010 and was hospitalized with 1k platelets. i was given a "winrow" treatment through an IV which i reacted to pretty badly. It brought my counts up to a stable 50k but then i started having pretty severe back pain and i found out i had a hreniated disc which i was told was caused from my reaction to the winrow. because of that and trhe itp i missed pretty much my whole sophmore basketball season. i put up with the back pain for quite a while but my numbers stayed at around 50 and i managed to get through my junior football season . Then after football i was set up to have surgery in november 2011 m so i was put on prendisone and given an IVIG to boost my counts up to at ;east 100k for surgery . My numbers went up to 220k and my surgery went well but afterwards my numbers dropped to 3k and ever since then its been a struggle to keep them up. ive been given a few IVIGs and ive been taking prendison (which isnt fun) as well as 6-MP but i havent really had much luck. I had my counts checked on monday and i was at 2k and was given another IVIG as well as an additional one today and im going to meet with someone tomorrow to discuss the next step to try and get rid of this. Im just on here to see what some other people might have to say and see what other people might be going through with all this. its been pretty rough on me. I live sports , im in something year round and havent been able to do anything with my counts so low. plus the way this prendisone makes me feel is no fun at all.

Hey Zack,
So happy you decided to join us, I am not a teenager, not even close but I just thought I would say welcome. I am from Australia and have had ITP for a few years now.
I don't know to much about the 6MP bot I have had my runs with prednisone and it sure can make you feel pretty miserable, a very wise old doctor once told me to keep telling myself that every time I felt bad to always remember it's just the meds, it's not you and life will better as soon as they are gone.
Zack I just wanted to say don't loose hope, this may pass and although your counts are low now hopefully there is a treatment that will get you back to your sport. I had quiet a few months on prednisone and so far I am in my 13 month with no treatment and counts are over 100.
At that sort of count there is nothing I wouldn't do, so hold on Zack, this can be a bit of a ride especially when first diagnosed but it will get easier and you will be just fine.
Milly

Hey, Zach. Glad you joined us!!! Milly pretty much summed it up. ITP is quite a "Rollercoaster" ride. Many ups and downs. It was tough for me at first. I did not know what ITP was. I thought it was some kind of rare diease at first and wondered why I got it. Then I found this site and realized that I was not alone in this battle. The people here have really helped me over the years. I have been on Prednisone, two Platelet transfussions and two Rituxan treatments. Counts have been good for the past two years. It really helps to talk to those that have experienced ITP. So if you ever have any questions or just need to talk do not hesitate to stop by!!

My name is Rebekah and I ma also 17. i was diagnosed at the age of 15. it is life changing but if you stick to this people on here you will get through it without a problem. it may take sometime to get over the shock but it want last for long. Just stay strong and tell yourself that everything is going to alright. As long as you don't let it get to you you will be fine. depression can result for this blood disorder so please watch for the signs and get help early if necessary.

hope that everything goes well for here.
