My sister was diagnosed with ITP early this year. She's 18.she has been on prednisone and cyclosporine. If she stops the drugs her platelets drops so fast. Haematologist is suggesting we do splenectomy. We aren't comfortable with it. Kindly seeking second opinion. Thank you

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

I would not entertain a splenectomy at my age let alone at 18. There is absolutely no guarantee it will work and the op is not without risks. There are many more medical treatments to try. Has haemo mentioned Promacta?

That is a good count Gkm - hope it stays up there for her!
Since your sister is 18 years old why not post your questions etc in the adult section, the General ITP Discussion - you may get more responses there.

Keep us posted!
