WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Just imagine if your phone rang at three o’clock in the morning, waking you out of a deep sleep. The doctor told you to come straight to the emergency room – not to brush your teeth, take a shower, and to be very careful not to bump yourself. “Couldn't it wait until the morning?" you asked. The doctor said, "No, you could bleed to death."

Patients diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) ride this rollercoaster on a daily basis. ITP is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to mount an attack against platelets that are imperative to clotting in the blood. ITP affects individuals of all ages, sexes, and ethnic origins and ten times as many people as hemophilia.

The Platelet Disorder Support Association is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and other platelet disorders through education, advocacy, and research. PDSA provides educational materials and free local support to 26 grassroots groups of patients, family, and friends. ITP patients nationwide participate in annual and regional meetings, local support groups, the PDSA name exchange program, and personal counseling.

PDSA.org provides valuable information about ITP, treatments, diet, and support for patients and medical professionals in managing ITP. It has grown to over 200+ pages of FREE information and has become the premier news source for medical professionals and patients with ITP and other platelet disorders. Pump It Up for Platelets! ~ for a world free of ITP proceeds will benefit PDSA programs and research for ITP and platelet disorders. Your support makes it possible for us to continue to expand the information, member services, and research we provide. With your help, we can increase our scope and pace!
