The Legacy Society – Establishing Support for PDSA’s Future
Written by Jeffrey CooperThe Legacy Society recognizes the very special people who have included PDSA in their wills, or who have created other types of planned/legacy gifts in support of PDSA. Through their foresight and philanthropy, these individuals create a future for PDSA where the resources devoted to supporting the ITP community is increased dramatically.
We invite you to join the Legacy Society by including PDSA in your financial or estate plan through a planned legacy gift. Such gifts might include a bequest in your will, a beneficiary designation (of your retirement assets or a life insurance policy), or other gifts advised by your lawyer or financial advisor.
Once you have completed your estate plans, please let us know. We would like to thank you for your generosity by including you in the Legacy Society.
Membership Benefits
Your membership in The Legacy Society involves no dues, obligations, or solicitations, but it does allow us to thank you and recognize you for the plans you have made and it may inspire generosity in others.
Each Legacy Society member enjoys the following benefits:
- • Listing in PDSA publications (unless you prefer anonymity)
- • Your name on the Legacy Society plaque in the PDSA office
- • The Legacy Society membership pin
- • Invitations to special events
- • Regular updates from PDSA’s Executive Director
However, the most important benefit you will receive from joining the Legacy Society is the sense of fulfillment knowing that your special gift will allow PDSA to grow its programs by leaps and bounds.
Thank you for considering a legacy gift that will provide support for future generations of ITP patients.
About Legacy Gifts
A legacy gift (otherwise known as an estate gift or a planned gift) is much more than a financial decision. It's a personal statement about who you are, what you care about, and the mark that you want to make on the world. Your gift to the Platelet Disorder Support Association will help PDSA advance its mission of education, advocacy, research, support and communication while, at the same time, establishing your own legacy.
Including PDSA in Your Will
To include PDSA in your will, please consider the examples below in consultation with your lawyer. Once the new language has been included, please let us know so we can thank you and recognize you as part of The Legacy Society.
To give a fixed amount of money or a designated property:
“I hereby give, devise and bequeath [identify here a specific sum of money or a specific asset] to the Platelet Disorder Support Association, 133 Rollins Avenue, Suite 5, Rockville, MD 20852, to be used for the benefit of the Platelet Disorder Support Association in such a manner as the PDSA Board of Directors thereof may direct.”
To give the residuary or a portion of your estate:
“I hereby give, devise and bequeath all [or a portion – for example, fifty percent (50%)] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to the Platelet Disorder Support Association, 133 Rollins Avenue, Suite 5, Rockville, MD 20852 to be used for the benefit of the Platelet Disorder Support Association in such a manner as the PDSA Board of Directors thereof may direct."
To Restrict Your Gift
If you wish to support a specific initiative, such as the PDSA Research Fund, your will or trust should clearly state the intended purpose so that the restriction is not so limited as to prevent PDSA from applying the money in the most efficient way. If you wish to designate your gift, simply add,
“...specifically for [describe the primary purpose, such as the PDSA Research Fund]. If it is determined by the Board of Directors of the Platelet Disorder Support Association that all or part of the gift is no longer needed, or for any reason cannot be used for the stated purpose, then such portion of the gift may be used for other related purposes, which the PDSA Board of Directors deems to be in the best interests of the Platelet Disorder Support Association, giving consideration to the original purposes described above.”

Members of the Circle of Hope are individuals who make gifts of $1,000 or more in a calendar year, or who raise over $1,000 for PDSA through a fundraising event.
Circle of Hope members strengthen our financial independence and enable us to exert more influence in the areas that are most important to our patients. And of course, the stronger our organization becomes, the better our voice will be heard when we advocate for more research and for better treatment options.
As a Circle of Hope member, you will receive all of our standard member benefits, as well as:
- • Listing of your name as a Circle of Hope member in The Platelet News
- • Receiving news of PDSA's latest developments through the

- • A special reception with the Board of Directors
and Medical Advisors at the conference - • Listing of your name on a plaque at PDSA's national headquarters

As of 2012, PDSA now offers additional levels of recognition and distinction for the "leaders among our leaders" in annual giving. Each additional level brings additional recognition opportunities and entitles the members to additional free registrations at the annual ITP Conference.
- • Circle of Hope – Platinum Club: $25,000
- • Circle of Hope – Gold Club: $10,000
- • Circle of Hope – Silver Club: $5,000
- • Circle of Hope – Bronze Club: $2,500
While all of the levels mentioned above recognize giving over the course of one year, PDSA has one additional (and highly exclusive) recognition category. Those who have given or raised $100,000 or more over their lifetime automatically become members of the Circle of Hope – Diamond Club.

to support initiatives that lead to better outcomes for the people we serve.PDSA programs are made possible through private donations, fundraising efforts, memberships, and grants through our corporate sponsors.
PDSA relies on the philanthropic support of the ITP community to educate patients and the medical community about developments in diagnosis and treatment, to provide support to individuals affected by ITP, and to fund vital research to find the causes and cure for ITP.
For Individuals
When you make a gift of $25 or more, we will proudly recognize you as a PDSA Member (unless you indicate otherwise) for one calendar year from the date of your gift. You receive a number of benefits with your membership, and PDSA receives a benefit as well: some funders look at the number of members that an organization has as they consider whether to fund that organization. In other words, the larger our membership base, the more attractive we are to potential partners.

Providing PDSA with Additional Instructions
Tribute Gifts
In times of great joy or great sorrow, people often make gifts to PDSA in honor of or in memory of a friend or family member. If you would like your gift to be recognized as a tribute gift, please indicate so in the Tribute Giving section of our online giving page in the memo section of your check. Also, if you provide us with a name and address, we will send a card to the tributee or the family member so they know that a gift was made in the tributee’s name.
Restricted Gifts
Unless otherwise noted by the donor, a donor’s gift will support all of the initiatives that PDSA undertakes. There are, however, two restricted funds that you can support as well. First is the PDSA Research Fund. Second is the Audi Gerstein Scholarship Fund. If you want your gift to support either of those funds, please indicate that on the “Donor Notes” section of our online giving page, or write it in the memo section of your check. If you are interested in discussion the creation of another restricted giving area, please contact John Boyle, PDSA’s Director of Development, at (877) 528-3538 or by

Other Ways of Giving
There are numerous ways of supporting PDSA through outside channels. Please note, however, that each of these channels have different business rules: some retain a portion of your gift as a processing fee, some do not name you as a donor, and many only disburse funds on a quarterly basis.
Here are a few additional channels that you may use to support PDSA:
- • Through your local United Way or Combined Federal Campaign
- • Through our Facebook Cause
- • Through Amazon where a percentage of the your purchases will go to PDSA if you follow this link
- • Through iGive
- • Through eBay’s Giving Works where all or a portion of your proceeds of your eBay sales go to PDSA
- • Through a vehicle donation program where the proceeds of the sale go to PDSA
Additional Information
The Platelet Disorder Support Association is a 501(c)3 organization and donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. PDSA’s tax ID number is 22-3611011.

Giving Through a United Way or CFC
There are over 1,000 United Way organizations and over 350 Combined Federal Campaigns (CFCs) within the U.S. Each is unique, and each has different methods of collecting and distributing funds to eligible non-profit agencies.
Although PDSA does receive gifts each year from donors through United Ways and CFCs, an increasing number of United Ways no longer distribute funds to national non-profits like PDSA, and instead distribute funds exclusively to non-profits that serve their local community directly. Many of those that do still allow their donors to give to PDSA require annual registration or other materials from the non-profit.
For those reasons, it is advisable that you contact John Boyle, PDSA’s Director of Development, at (877) 528-3538 or by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you are considering supporting PDSA through your local United Way. John can work with your United Way to find out if PDSA is currently eligible to receive funds and to complete the appropriate registration if necessary.
Designating Your Gift to PDSA
When PDSA is Listed as a Supported Agency
CFC – PDSA is listed in the National/International part of the CFC Charity List as #10207.
TRUIST (UNITED E-WAY) – PDSA’s agency code is #062581.
United Ways – PDSA is listed as a supported agency for many United Ways, but their agency codes change regularly, so it is best to check with your United Way each year to make sure that you have the correct agency code. Please contact John Boyle, PDSA’s Director of Development, at (877) 528-3538 or by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you need assistance identifying the proper code.
When PDSA is Not Listed as a Supported Agency
Some United Ways allow “write in” designations to non-profit organizations that do not have an agency code. Please use our name (Platelet Disorder Support Association), our address (133 Rollins Avenue, #5, Rockville, MD 20852) and if necessary our EIN number (22-3611011) in the area of your pledge/gift card where you designate funds.
Notifying PDSA of Your Gift
It is important that you authorize your United Way or CFC to share your name with us on any pledge/gift form that you fill out. Having your name makes it possible for us to recognize you as a member, track your pledge, send you an acknowledgement when we receive funds, and allow us to follow-up with the United Way and CFC if there are problems.
If you do not authorize your name to be shared, there will be no way for PDSA to know that you made a gift, as the United Way or CFC disbursement checks will list the donor as “Anonymous.”
If you do give your United Way or CFC authorization to release your name, they will eventually send PDSA a pledge report with your name and pledge information. This, however, can take several months, so after you have filled out your United Way or CFC pledge/gift form, please ask for a copy of your form and then send it to PDSA via mail, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or fax (301-770-6638). This will enable us to record your pledge in a timely fashion, make sure payments are properly credited to your record, and give you access to our member benefits.
There are a number of ways in which an employer may support the charitable giving of its employees.
Some employers organize workplace giving campaigns. In most cases, these campaigns are set up to allow you to make automatic donations to non-profits through your employer's payroll system. Sometimes those campaigns are done independently, and sometimes they are done through a United Way or as part of the Combined Federal Campaign.
Some employers offer a matching gift program. There is a great amount of variety in how these are run, but in many cases the employer offers a dollar-for-dollar match if you fill out the appropriate paperwork. If your employer does not offer a matching gift program, consider asking them to start one.
If you have any questions about making a gift through a workplace giving campaign or securing a matching gift from your employer, please contact John Boyle, PDSA’s Director of Development, at (877) 528-3538 or by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
