Fundraising Events
PDSA receives no federal funding. Our national events not only help support PDSA programs and research, but also help raise public awareness for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and other platelet disorders. PDSA is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit corporation. Donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law. PDSA is eligible for corporate matching programs.
For more information about registration, organization and corporate sponsorship of our national events, contact Jody Shy, PDSA's Programs & Events Manager by email at jshy@pdsa.org or by phone at 877-528-3538.
Fundraisers effectively assist PDSA to continuously enhance the lives of people with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and other platelet disorders through education, advocacy, and research and significantly impact the ITP community because they:
- RAISE AWARENESS – ITP affects more than 10 times as many individuals as hemophilia yet is unknown by most. Fundraisers often generate local and national media stories about ITP and inform local community members about the disease.
- LEND SUPPORT – We hear repeatedly how fundraising events have helped ITP patients who feel alone in their world of ITP meet and connect with others who understand.
- CREATE AN OUTLET TO RELIEVE ANXIETY – Our volunteers overwhelmingly agree that organizing and executing a fundraiser proves therapeutic in channeling their anxieties and fears about their disease into positive energy that helps raise awareness and supports others with ITP.
- INCREASE FINANCIAL SUPPORT – It would be remiss not to mention the importance of the funding received through the efforts of our dedicated volunteers. Throughout these trying economic times, it’s our fundraising events that have allowed PDSA to continue to serve the ITP community with no disruption in the services that we so proudly provide for free. We are forever grateful for their awesome efforts.

My name is Isabel Suarez and last year my mother was admitted to the hospital due to being newly diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). This was the first time either one of us ever heard of the autoimmune condition of ITP. We quickly learned that because this condition is so rare, there was little medical research known about it. It became a difficult challenge to find treatment solutions as the doctors, medical staff, and we were all stumped as to how to treat my mother to get her healthy again. Through this time feelings of uncertainty and fear were felt all around. As time went on, doctors all worked hard through this complex case of my mother with ITP.
Thankfully, my mother made a full recovery and is healthy! My mother’s experience in the hospital led us to both know we wanted to do something to help bring awareness to ITP and to help further families who may encounter medical challenges with it. I am a musician and college student in Austin Texas, I instantly knew how I wanted to help shine a light on ITP. That's when I created the "Amplify Awareness of ITP Benefit Concert". A fundraising event with the mission to raise awareness for the autoimmune condition ITP, using music to connect people with a cause. During my mother's time in the hospital, I spent many nights right by her side as she fought her battle. On the nights when I wasn't there, she would watch a video of me performing a song she loved me to sing. We didn't know what was going to happen with my mother and her ITP battle, we weren’t guaranteed she was going to be okay, but with music, we both held on to hope through these challenging times. Now we are honored to have the opportunity to help bring awareness to ITP. Instead of watching me on video in a hospital bed, my mom will watch me on stage performing, and we both are forever thankful that is how our story with ITP will end. Together, we will introduce people to ITP and amplify a push for medical research, treatment options, and overall support for those who will encounter this autoimmune condition.
50/50 Fundraiser for ITP
My name is Jody Shy and I’m the Director of Programs and Events for PDSA. While I oversee our fundraising events throughout the year, I thought in PDSA’s 25th year it would be important to also host my own fundraiser to increase awareness for ITP. While I don’t have ITP nor do any of my family members, I have had the opportunity to meet so many ITP warriors and their families over the last 8 years with the organization. I’ve heard their stories, I’ve laughed and cried with them, and I’ve been fortunate to be even a small part of their overall ITP journey.
In 2023, I am also celebrating my 50th birthday. For this fundraiser, I’m going to walk 50 miles before the end of the year in honor of my 50 years around the sun. The concept is easy – pay $50 and pledge to walk 50 miles by the end of 2023. You can also make a donation of $50 without needing to walk.
Will you join me to raise awareness for ITP and help celebrate my 50th birthday year? $50 for 50 miles.
